Training in Career Counseling 101

The field of career counseling has evolved to help provide guidance surrounding what vocation will fit an individual’s lifestyle, personality, and educational qualifications.

More specifically, career counseling is “the pursuit of any therapeutic intervention whose scope is to affect the career decision-making process based on elements/theories of traditional counseling” (Robertson, 2013, p. 3).

The life-design framework for counseling is an “intersubjective process which defines client experience through using personal accounts (i.e. life stories) to frame their unique pathway” (Savickas et al., 2009).

In terms of applying the life-design model to career counseling, practitioners focus more on discovering the intention, purpose, and calling of the individual, rather than simply administering aptitude tests to discover what model fits the client best (Madigan, 2011; Savickas, 2015).

It is important to incorporate life-design strategies alongside career counseling strategies to ensure that you are addressing the individual, as well as examining the career path they want to take.

Below are strategies that are in line with the life-design framework, which can be incorporated alongside any formal career counseling training (Savickas et al., 2009):

  • Motivating the client and developing client self-esteem and self-efficacy
  • Challenging dysfunctional thoughts and co-constructing new narratives toward achieving career goals
  • Developing the client’s self-knowledge (e.g., career management skills, career values, career interests) and acquisition of information regarding career and educational opportunities
  • Helping the client learn job-search techniques and develop self-presentation skills and a social network
  • Providing help (if needed) in practical matters such as sending job applications and creating résumés
  • Developing the client’s action plan
  • Supporting the client throughout implementing the action plan

When engaging in career counseling, the most effective results are not based on the modality of counseling that the practitioner employs, but the number of sessions the client completes, as well as the quality of exercises and amount of occupational information the counselor employs in their practice (Milot-Lapointe, Savard, & Le Corff, 2018).

Therefore, it is essential that career counselors seek the most relevant and applicable training when pursuing career counseling as a specialization or adding career counseling to an already established counseling practice.

4 Career Counseling Courses & Degrees

Becoming a career counselor requires you to have a bachelor’s degree (in any field) and a master’s degree in counseling. A background in counseling and therapy is essential in pursuing career counseling.

While clients might not start off seeking emotional support or challenging negative thinking patterns, these are elements that can emerge and keep a client from being successful in their chosen career path (Robertson, 2013).

Therefore, career counselors may need to provide elements from traditional counseling and therapeutic techniques to ensure their client is in the right headspace to put their energy toward pursuing their career goals.

Below, we have provided you with a few graduate programs that are specific to career counseling.

1. Master of Science Degree in Career Counseling (MS), Florida State University, United States

College of Education

This program combines clinical training with expertise in career counseling, and students can pursue a specialty in either career counseling or clinical mental health.

The diversity that the program offers gives students the opportunity to combine their knowledge about career counseling with clinical mental health, giving them the option of working with their clients to assist in both areas.

Prospective students also have the opportunity to pursue an education specialist (EdS) degree, if they are working in educational settings and want to upgrade their qualifications, while the MS is geared more toward students looking for a central specialization.

Students in both programs have the opportunity to work in the career counseling field, as the university has a partnership with the Florida State University Counseling Center.

This program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP), which governs counseling standards in the United States.

This program requires three years of part-time study, offered both online and in person. While the first year focuses on counseling models with a strong emphasis on personal development, the second year integrates evidence-based coaching models, integrating both disciplines together under the framework of personal consultancy.

5 Best Certification Opportunities

While a few master’s programs are specific to career counseling, others offer career counseling courses alongside a regular counseling program. Postgraduate certifications are shorter and typically add on to an existing knowledge base garnered through a practitioner’s previous education.

When deciding which option is right for you, it is important to consider where you are in your individual pathway as a practitioner and how strongly you want to focus on career counseling in your practice.

  1. Céline Paquette, c.o.

    Dear Dr. Gabriella,

Interesting article which shows what is being offered in the U.S., England and English Canada. I would like to add the Masters degrees that are required to be a career guidance counsellor in the Québec province of Canada. The career guidance counselling profession is certified and monitored by l’Ordre des conseillers et des conseillères d’orientation du Québec, which is an official level of professional accreditation equal to that of psychologists, doctors, lawyers, etc. The masters in career counseling are offered at l’Université Laval in Québec city, l’Université de Sherbrooke, l’Université du Québec à Montréal and McGill University. The masters offered in the Québec province of Canada have been used to develop programmes internationally, from France and Belgium to India.

    Best regards.

      Hi Afaf,

I would suggest taking a look at some of the Member Organizations listed under the International Career Counsellor’s Club website for professional development courses. I’m sure some of these would center around the capacity to train other career counsellors.

You might even wish to drop an email to the ICC who can point you toward an appropriate training option.

      Hope this helps a little!
